I’m not familiar with the complete process of education required for a nurse. I do however know the education requirements needed for each step in the process. One day visiting my physician’s office I started to wonder which degrees the office nurses received, so I asked. As it turns out, of the 4 nurses working on the premise, 2 were RN’s, 1 held a BSN and 1 held a Masters.  I asked myself another question, what’s the difference? And frankly it’s huge! Nursing is very competitive, it’s true they are in demand, but thousands of nurses are graduating each year from school. What makes a person stand out of a crowd? One huge difference is the degree you get for the position you are applying to.

If you want to be a nurse director, or take care of finances etc. you need at minimum a Masters degree. Along with experience a Masters May not even do the trick, many have Doctorates. Other positions require BSN degrees, and other positions such as an RN require a 2 year degree. For those who want to advance in their career, consider receiving a higher degree. Some may be thinking, well how do you expect me to get a degree! I know, I know you need to work to pay off those debts and to well, live, right? Other options are available, such as online degree programs. Colleges and universities across the country offer RN TO BSN online degree programs. They also offer Master programs, with various specialties.

If you are serious about advancing in your career as a nurse, consider getting a higher level of education. This will go along way and will show people just how much you care. Applying new knowledge with experience is the best way to improve patient care.
