NEW YORK, NY – Chelsea’s Agora Gallery will feature the original work of American artist Kathleen Messmer in Illumination: An Exhibition of Fine Art Photography. The exhibition will open on November 8, 2016 and run through November 30, 2016 with an opening reception on Thursday, November 10 from 6-8 PM.
In her abstract expressionist photography, American artist Kathleen Messmer captures the convergence of gesture, lines, shadows, and texture to create truly emotive works. Messmer takes recognizable objects and transforms them into fantastical compositions of flow and light, boldness and color, and ever-evolving form. What results is a collection able to transport the viewer into a world of mood, feeling, and profound meaning.
Inspired by the work of Leonardo da Vinci, Imogene Cunningham, Karl Blossfeldt, and Georgia O’Keeffe, Messmer has indeed made natural light and shadow a central theme of her work. Like O’Keeffe, much of her art is focused on the eternal mysteries hidden within the flower. As Messmer explains, “Botanical abstracts offer a beautiful, voluptuous symphony of the lines and color I look for most. Sometimes I get serenity; other times I get riotous movement, bold statements, and power….They fascinate me with their presence. I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
Kathleen Messmer currently lives and works in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where she is also a feature film producer. She is also involved in the wildlife preservation photography project “UnWildlife.”

About the Exhibition
The modern photographer in Illumination: An Exhibition of Fine Art Photography
Illumination: An Exhibition of Fine Art Photography opens this November at Agora Gallery. The exhibition spotlights eight premier contemporary photographers who play with visual expectations and technical limitations. Three artists take on the landscape format: there are horizons filtered through layers of atmospheric gauze, otherworldly plains shot in high detail, and cityscapes framed as endless, depthless fields of pure pattern. In black-and-white and color, the viewer is offered visions of the world as yawning or claustrophobic, logical or chaotic, dreamy or cold. Alongside these are the work of an accomplished animal photographer who creates psychological portraits with her naturalistic works. Another featured photographer builds her own still life compositions, but subverts their classical realism for her unique narrative aims, and yet the quiet dreamlike works of another photographer bring a unique balance to the collection. Rounding out the exhibition are two abstract artists who use their technical prowess and historical knowledge of process to create photographs of pure light and pattern. Though the interests run far and wide among these artists, the show is an unambiguous message of modernity.
