NEW YORK, NY – Chelsea’s Agora Gallery will feature the original work of Michael Dolen in The New Flux. The exhibition opens October 20, 2017 and runs through November 9, 2017 with an opening reception on Thursday, October 26 from 6-8 pm.
Several worlds meet in Michael Dolen’s multimedia works. “As a painter,” he says, “I’ve always been drawn to high-intensity surfaces, full-tilt coloration and structures that accommodate the intersection of abstract and geometric forms.” The meeting of such elements results in images that keep the viewer’s eye in motion and physically pull us into the space of each painting. Faces and bodies intersect with geometrical shapes and grids, playing with our sense of perspective and constructing a world that is precisely thought out, yet has the freedom and spontaneity of a dream. Dolen also orchestrates his colors to maximum effect, balancing intense shades and subtler hues to heighten the dynamic quality of each image.
Influenced by Modernism and Abstract Expressionism while studying art at The Cooper Union, Dolen has built on those traditions and taken them in a new direction. With over 30 years of experience as a graphic designer, he applies the clarity of that discipline to the sensuous forms and lush colors he employs, creating a unique, engaging body of work. The artist lives and works in New York City.

About the Exhibition
New Flux
The New Flux presents a cross-section of different pictorial practices gathered around the theme of nature in urban life. Taking what is specific to a natural setting—a landscape, a body of water—and showing how it impacts the flow or urban life, The New Flux makes a case that our dependency on nature is just as pervasive as our dependency on technology.
