Harned was intrigued with what an architect or artist could do with limited space. In architecture, it was designing an elaborate building for a small piece of land. In art, it was turning a specific sized canvas into a masterpiece.

Now 56, Harned has spent 30 years painting in oil.

Originally from Florida, Harned’s earliest works were more garden-themed. A resident of Grand Junction since 1991, Harned is now more focused on vistas of the West.

His paintings are so detailed that Harned has finished only 30 pieces.

Unfortunately, for Harned the artist, free time and opportunities to paint must be arranged around his full-time job for the U.S. Postal Service.

“It’s been about five months since I picked up a brush,” Harned said. “I hate it, but you get through it and things change.” He expects to have more time to paint in the fall.

Harned primarily paints on linen and masonite. He prefers oil paints because “it’s forgiving. You can make a mistake,” he said.

Harned currently is not showing his work anywhere but hopes that will change. After all, he only has five or six paintings left to sell and galleries typically want more inventory.
