This ability threatens to warp his fate when, one night, a woman named Rukia Kuchiki appears in his bedroom. When a malevolent spirit, also referred to as a "Hollow," makes itself known in the same neighborhood, Kuchiki is massively wounded in trying to guard the teenager from it. In order to aid Ichigo defend himself from the spirit, she tries to give him some of her powers, but ends up giving him all of it by accident. As a result, Rukia must stay with Ichigo until her skills reload, but there is still other evil Hollows to catch, and so Kurosaki must take charge.
