Places that have worthwhile activity inside are the ones that typically charge covers - and sometimes substantial ones at that. Now if you have a limited budget, do what you have to do, just know that you’re going to get what you pay for.

At the same time, while finding the cheapest place isn’t the best way to find the best one, it is worth inquiring about the drink price-to-cover ratio. Now don’t go up to the doorman and expect him to do math, but do ask what the cover is and what the price of a beer is. If you pay $20 to get into a reputable place that features $4 beers, that’s usually going to be better than going into a dive bar with no cover and $10 beers if you plan on drinking there all night.
