All rc helicopters are basically self powered helicopter models which have the aerodynamics, the parts and the equipment required for control of the helicopter though the use of a control device that is hand held by the user.

Basically,The Rc helicopters- various types and designs in existence Articles rc helicopters are controlled through the use of electrical or mechanical servos that control the various forces that affect the helicopter in flight. A combination of input signals sent to these servos controls the yaw, pitch and acceleration in order to execute maneuvers such as backwards flight, straight flight, hovering and sometimes other acrobatic maneuvers. The number of maneuvers that rc helicopters can perform depend on a variety of factors. Of these, the major factor is the size and capacity of the motor being used. They come in varying sizes and power displacements and the higher the engine displacement, the higher the size of the rotors it can turn and thereby the larger the size of the helicopter.

Of the common types of motors, the common types used are nitro engines which work on the internal combustion of a nitro methane-methanol fuel, brushless engines which run on batteries or gas turbines and also traditional gasoline and petrol engines. As such, each of these engines has different constraints of power output, flight times and maximum ranges. Also, they have a direct effect on the size of the helicopter and the maneuverability of the helicopter. The key factor however, when it comes to maneuverability is the number of control channels that are provided to the helicopter. The rc helicopters may have channels which ranges from 2-6 with 6 being the highest and the most maneuverable but the hardest to control. The ready to use toy rc helicopters that are found commonly throughout the market and which work generally on fumeless electric engines have 4-6 channels and are therefore capable of executing maneuvers which may not be performed in real life helicopters also.

The rc helicopters prepared by hobbyists are extremely varied in their functions, channels and sizes. Depending on the capabilities and the desired projection of the hobbyist, these rc helicopters are generally built from scratch with different kinds of engines and also different kinds of gyros (which control the servos) and rotors (multi-axial, multiple rotors make for greater stability and also reverse flow and greater maneuverability). Also, the Tx/Rx equipment used in these rc helicopters can be chosen and the control system can be custom made. Hobbyists also may have to undertake a series of tests and trials in order to ensure the feasibility of the craft and their own skill at flying it. Generally, each of these rc helicopters can fly from 7-14 minutes continuously depending on the type of power source and the ranges. Some of these transmitters can have ranges of over a mile which makes them great for remotely operating helicopters over inoperable terrain.
