Many experienced poker players would tell you that poker is a continuing process of learning the game and improving your play. It takes a lot of time and practice to be really good at it.

 

So how does one win a poker game? Some players would win the game by chance. Others would win a game because of luck and opportunity. The more experienced players would prevail because of hard skill and discipline. In context, they have developed these two qualities to achieve victory many times over then just merely relying on luck and chance.

 

If you win the game due to luck and chance this could not be the same throughout the rest of the games you would play. These could happen once or maybe twice but that’s just about it. You are likely to lose many poker games in if you just always rely on luck or chance to help you.

 

The expert players are right- it takes skill and discipline to win in poker. If you win the game the first time then you must appreciate it and learn from it. Think back how you played the game and try to analyze it. Think of methods on how to improve it. Try to apply the same tactics in your future games. You would likely have more wins than losses.

 

The skill and discipline in playing poker could include making solid decisions on your part. You have to decide if you want to play it fast or slow.  Determine if you want to hold on to your cards or give them up. You have to make a decision of making a raise, call or check. You have to know how much to bet. Think hard if it’s a good tactic to bluff your way through the game. These are skills that you would have to learn. It could take a lot of discipline to learn these skills.

 

You would also need the skill of making probabilities. What is the probability of you winning the game? What are the odds that you are holding the good cards? You would have to develop this skill by playing poker as often as you can.

 

Then you would also need to develop your skill on what experts call as reading player poker tells- you being able to understand body language, expressions and other physical influences that could tell how your opponents are playing the game. These signs could give you tips on how to act in your game and perhaps win it as well.

 

 

 

 

 

 

In reality poker is a card game where players try to win one over the other by raising the stakes. It is a game that has a high risk of losing or winning because no one is exactly sure who holds the winning cards.
