Building Blocks Exercises – Yes, They Still Matter

Through their persistence and some assistance from the teachers or parents, children will soon learn the best way to build the structures.

One of the most used educational tools catered for children today is the building blocks set. You don’t have to wonder why despite the advancement in technology, building bricks are still used extensively in schools and daycares across the country. Building blocks really do help develop the many skills that children will find useful later in their life, which include social skills, fine motor skills, math skills and even problem solving skills.

How exactly do building blocks help children develop their fine motor skills? For starters, as they play with the building bricks set, children will use their muscle – or specifically the large muscles, to move around and put the bricks accordingly. As for how building bricks help develop the social skills of children, you need only look at your local daycare or remember from your own experience. It is almost certain that the kids will interact and cooperate with other kids in building the structures. This will definitely help brush up their social skills as they are encouraged to work together in a group for an extended period of time.

What about the problem-solving skills? Well, because the blocks come in many different shapes, sizes and weights – building a structure can be quite a complicated affair.  As for how building bricks can help children learn math skills, during the course of their experience in building the structure of their choice, the children will learn to differentiate the different number of blocks require to complete a structure. Plus, the teachers can always initiate a game that will have the children count the number of blocks they have. These are just some basic skills that building blocks can offer children, but for sure there are other benefits of them.

While it is easy to dismiss building blocks as an outdated learning tool in children’s development, the reality is far from it. Sure, kids nowadays are pampered with many videogames and computer games that they can play on their smartphones – but there is no reason why the two can’t go hand in hand.
