Difference between Duvet and Comforter

Duvets and comforters are both forms of bed linen used to keep warm during cold.

These two forms of bed linen are usually confused for each other. Let us find out what exactly is the difference between a Duvet and a Comforter.

A duvet (pronounced due- vay) means “down” in French. It is essentially a cloth bag filled with either feathers or down or both. Modern duvets are filled with wool, silk and artificial fibers also.

A comforter is a thick, fluffy blanket that is usually filled with synthetic stuffing. The stuffing is evenly distributed and the comforter set is stitched to keep it secure.

A duvet can be used as both bedding and a blanket whereas a comforter is only used as a blanket. When a duvet is used, no other bed linen is required. You need to use quilts, bed covers and other bed linen while using  comforter sets.

The difference from the care point of view is that duvets require less care than comforters because only the removable cover of the duvets comes in contact with the skin and thus, that’s the only part that needs to be cleaned.  You should not wash the inner stuffing of a duvet. The stuffing of a comforter cannot withstand regular washing and thus it must be dry-cleaned.

Bedding comforters are usually a little larger than a bed size so that it can be draped over the sides of the bed whereas a duvet is much smaller. Moreover, duvets come in a variety of thicknesses (to be used as per season) unlike comforter sets that have only single thickness.

Since a duvet is a multi-purpose bed linen, it is priced slightly higher than a comforter is. Still a duvet is considered better value for money because it solves all the bed-making hassles.
