Summer Camps: Keeping In Touch With The Kids

Once summer camps get started some parents find that they have lost touch with their kids. While you are enjoying their opportunity to be away for a while, you don't want to completely lose all lines of communication. It is possible to stay in touch during this busy time.

As you drive away you know that sending the kids to summer camps is a great idea. You get a chance to have a mini vacation and they get the opportunity to go exploring, meet new friends, and enjoy a mini vacation from you. But you don't want to completely lose the connection that you have. You still want to keep tabs on them. You want to know what they are doing, whether or not they are having a good time, and even whether or not they need anything. Here are a few good tips to keep in touch with the kids.
Phone Cards:
While most kids have cell phones it may not be possible to bring them into the summer camps. Many facilities look to limit the amount of time that kids spend texting, messaging, and even calling. It isn't the parents they are trying to avoid, it is also other kids. Camp is supposed to be a place to have fun and kids don't get much out of the experience if they just sit there texting.
Instead of a phone, send your children to summer camps with a phone card. While the technology seems a bit outdated, this gives them a chance to get in touch with you whenever they need to. There is no added expense to the camp and you don't have to worry about receiving a collect call. Your child may just feel a sense of relief with a calling card hidden away in their cabin for emergencies or if they just want to talk.
Establishing a Set Time:
Sometimes summer camps get really busy. The kids feel like they go from activity to activity. At the end of the day they may be exhausted. However there is always the opportunity for a little down time. Kids can relax in their cabins, hang out with friends, or maybe even read or play a game. When you find out what time this is, see if you and the kids can set up a routine. They can call you during these times. You can choose a day of the week, every other day, or whatever makes your camper feel comfortable. Just be sure that during those times you can be available to talk as well.
Sending a Letter:
Even more old fashioned than the calling card is a pen and a piece of paper. It takes way more time than a phone call and you aren't going to be able to communicate anything urgent, but it does present your message in a whole new way. You can remind your child how much you love him or her and they have something to hang onto. They can keep the letter and when they start to feel a little homesick, they have something to look forward to. Of course, it can't hurt to send your letter in a care package filled with little treats and goodies.
