Affordable health insurance for individuals is sometimes difficult to find.  In order for your health insurance to be affordable, you sometimes must make compromises.

Due to the current economy, many small businesses have had to decide whether to cut employees or health benefits.  For many of these businesses, the choice has been to cut health benefits.  While employees are grateful to keep their jobs, the choice of their employers has them looking for affordable health insurance for individuals.

Health insurance for individuals can be difficult to find.  In addition, many plans will not accept individuals that have pre-existing benefits or will exclude those pre-existing benefits from the plan.

Often, individual health insurance is too expensive for many workers to continue.  You may need to find a company that will allow you to customize your insurance to meet both your needs and your budget.  In order to find affordable individual health insurance, you may need to compromise on some coverage.

One way to save money on premiums is to ask for higher deductibles.   If you are in good health, this option often makes sense.  However, you need to have savings that will cover the deductable in case you do have a major illness.  In fact, some hospitals now require you to pay your deductible before checking in for non-emergency surgery.

Persons that use their insurance regularly may find that it is worth the price difference to have a lower deductible so that the insurance moves into place quickly without draining their savings.  If your company has cut other insurance benefits, but still offers a cafeteria plan, you can have a certain amount of each paycheck set aside each pay period that can be used for medical expenses and to meet the deductible of your insurance.  The only problem with this plan is that the money set aside must be used or it is lost at the end of the year.  Many families will use this money at the year end to cover any need for eyeglasses or dental work so that it is not lost.
