Focus On Building Health If You Want Weight Loss

You hear this word a lot – 'metabolism' and you may ask "But what is it?" It is the process of converting fuel (food) to energy (movement and heat) and happens in your muscles and organs.

We commonly refer to it as 'burning calories' and metabolism is essentially the speed at which your body's engine is running.

You sometimes here the words 'basal metabolism' and this is the metabolic rate or caloric expenditure needed to maintain basal body functions such as your heart beating and breathing. It is how fast your "engine' is running when you are resting or sleeping and accounts for about 75% of the calories you expend on a daily basis.

Modern methods of weight loss work by increasing the rate of your metabolism thereby increasing the amount of calories you burn throughout the day and night. This is a two pronged approach. The first thing we do is increase the amount of toned muscle tissue on our body as this tissue is highly active, requires a lot of fuel and is what drives the metabolism.

We need to tone our muscles with proper exercise that works the muscular system. This is the only exercise method that will boost your metabolism significantly to burn off excess body fat. This is achieved not with old fashioned methods of 'cardio' exercise such as walking, jogging or cycling but with strength training exercise.

If you enjoy these endurance types of activities you can still do them but consider them recreational 'fun' things to do that are part of living an active lifestyle. Your proper exercise program can not be replaced by low intensity activities if you want to become lean, slim and trim.

The second big thing you can do to increase your metabolism is with your food and involves eating 5-7 small meals every 2-3 hours throughout the day. These meals should contain around 20 grams of protein to keep your engine running hot to burn lots of excess fat. Add raw and cooked vegetables for a healthy meal that will give you energy so you can put some effort into your exercise program for fast results.

To burn off excess body fat it is important that you eat enough food. The World Health Organization states that anything under 1800 calories per day for women and 2100 for men is a starvation diet. So if you eat less that this it would be unlikely you would be able to exercise with enough intensity to make any meaningful changes to your body.

Instead of focusing on eating less, worry about what you should be eating such as enough protein and high quality whole food with minimal processed food. This will support your exercise program and give you more of everything rather than less, more energy, more strength, more fat loss, more happiness and more out of life.

If you focus on simply building your health you will end up with results beyond your dreams. There is no other way to get a strong, leanFind Article, toned healthy body. And this is really what you want isn't it?
