French Toast Casserole Makes Breakfast Easy

Face it, your time is limited. Whether you are a parent trying to get your kids to school or a professional trying to get yourself through another commute preparing a filling and hearty breakfast for you and your family eats into your time. Anything that can take a bite out of that spent time will help. That is where a quick breakfast like French toast casserole comes in.

Like its namesake, the casserole version of this dish uses bread to soak up an egg and milk mixture that, when cooked, forms a delicious custardy early morning meal. Unlike its griddle-born cousin, however, this dish requires less prep and less time standing over a hot stove. While French toast on the stovetop requires the cook to individually soak each bread slice and attend to each slice as it cooks French toast in the oven is relatively hands off. Once you have made your custard add it to the bread lined and greased casserole dish, pop in the pre-heated oven and walk away. Play with your kids. Talk to your husband. Prep for that morning meeting. That time is now yours. When done serve with maple syrup or fresh fruit and your day will be off to a great start.

Tips For a Better Casserole:

- Any style of bread can be used but for a more authentic taste use challah or French bread. Raisin bread adds some extra flavor while whole grain bread makes for a filling breakfast.

- Add some fruits or nuts to make this breakfast even more healthful. Bananas, chopped apples, cranberries, walnuts and pecans all make wonderful additions.

- Experiment adding spices and extracts to maximize the flavor intensity of the custard. Ground cinnamon and vanilla extract are great, but do not be afraid to add nutmeg, orange extract or even chocolate chips for a treat.

- Make it the night before. Take the casserole dish straight from the refrigerator to the ovenFree Articles, and add some extra time until the top is golden brown and delicious. It can also be frozen to cook at some later time.

- Do not limit yourself to breakfast. This dish can just as easily make a great dinner or an easy addition to that Sunday brunch you are hosting.
