Pizza: Frozen or Delivery?Ever since frozen pizzas hit the super market shelves, pizza lovers have been asking themselves the same thing: frozen or delivery? There are some things to look for when trying to make that decision. For many pizza lovers, it doesn’t matter where the source of the pie is, as long as it has those qualities and toppings sought after. Crust, sauce, cheese and toppings are all under inspection when choosing a good pie. As long as the standards are met, the pie’s origin could be the freezer or fresh.One of the major concerns with frozen is the quality of the crust. Sometimes the crust doesn’t hold up very well to being created, frozen, thawed, reheated, thawed and cooked again. You get the point. So, to judge the quality of the pie, some people choose to look at the crust. Does it hold up well during freezing and transport? Is it brittle or dry? Does it brown well? These are all qualities to look for. Then there is the sauce. For some people the sauce is what makes or breaks a pizza regardless of its origin- frozen or restaurant. If it is too sweet, the pie can take on a very bland taste. If it is too runny with too much moisture, the pie can become soggy and not hold up will. If it is too salty, the taste of the sauce can drown out the flavor of the toppings and crust. Basically, you want a tomato-y sauce that has a fresh marinara mouth feel and taste. The cheese is also a major part of the deliciousness. In frozen pizzas in particular, the cheese can get a little funky. Sometimes cheep cheese on a frozen pie can become rubbery, tasting like cardboard or plastic. One thing connoisseurs look for in frozen topping cheese is its melting ability. Is the cheese melting evenly on the pie and is it spread evenly as a topping? Too much or too little cheese can be a problem. Other toppings vary from pie to pie depending on the desires of the consumer. For veggie lovers, look for large, healthy looking pieces of vegetable that appear to have the ability to withstand oven temperatures. You don’t want anything that looks like it will turn into a piece of mush. For meat lovers, quality of taste is important. Like the cheese, meat can take on a cardboard, bland flavor if it is not good quality. It can also overpower the flavor of the pie if it is too salty. You want an even layer of pepperoni, sausage or hamburger depending. You will also want to decide what form you want your meat to take on as some pizza companies will shred the pepperoni or just put a couple of slices. Once you find your proper criteria for a good frozen pie, then you can start the science of comparing frozen to delivery. Occasionally , you
will find a frozen pizza as good as something you could buy at your
favorite restaurant.
