How To Ensure Increasing Effectiveness Of Natural Pest Control Against Mice

It's good to know you can get rid of mice naturally and keep them away without exposing your family and pets to hazards. Here are some ways to get rid of mice naturally and without harming humans or animals.

You want to rid your home, barn, farm equipment and other areas of mice. What is the best way to do this? There are plenty of products and traps available to do the job, but not all of them are safe considering the toxicity of most rodent-control methods,

Seal Gaps

It's amazing how mice can squeeze themselves into tiny little gaps to get into your house. By "tiny" I mean the size of a dime. That's right, a mouse can wriggle through an opening this small! So your first step to get rid of mice naturally is probably the hardest: finding and sealing every gap this size in your home's exterior.

Seal any gaps you find with caulk, stuffing stainless steel pads into larger gaps before sealing. Keep doors firmly closed at all times, and add weatherstripping if necessary. Dog- and cat-owners who like the convenience of a pet door should consider electronic pet door, which is insulated and seals tightly but opens automatically in response to a "smart key" on your pet's collar.

Peppermint Oils

Use peppermint oil — mice HATE it! Although most people like the smell of peppermint oil, mice (and other pests like spiders) hate the stuff. Use this to your advantage by adding it to yourhomemade cleaners. You can also dab peppermint oil onto cotton balls and tuck them into the corners of your pantry shelves to keep rodents away. (Bonus: ants and cockroaches hate the smell of peppermint, too!)

Peppermint oil can work for ridding an area of mice. You can use this indoors or outdoors. It is a natural pest control product that is safe for humans and animals. Make sure that the peppermint oil you use is labeled as 100% pure. Simply put a few drops of the oil on some cotton balls. Leave the cotton balls in the areas where you know the mice are living. Peppermint oil will dissipate quickly on the cotton balls, so you will need to replace them up to a couple times a week.

Mothballs

Mothballs will also get rid of mice about 65% of the time. Take the mothballs directly from the box and place them in the areas inhabited by mice. Mothballs are toxic and should not be used in non-ventilated areas or around kids and pets. This method can be extremely dangerous to not only humans, but pets as well. If a child or pet eats a mothball, they can become very sick, potentially life-threatening.

Baits and Traps

Nowhere can be made 100% proofed against rodents and you may already be too late to stop rodents entering. So place baits and traps in position NOW. This will also mean that the baits and traps are ready for any rodents that gain entry by some route not found during your search. Deal with them before they become a problem.

Traps are rarely sufficient on their own to get rid of rats or mice, but they will be effective at catching ‘dopey' rats and mice that have had a feed of bait. The best lures for traps are peanut butter or chocolate but these have a limited life. Placed correctly traps are almost as effective without bait. Place traditional snap traps at right angles to, and against walls where rats and mice would travel. Rats and mice are generally reluctant to move into open space and prefer to stay close to some vertical surface or stay in enclosed places.
