Try the methods below to quickly and effectively stop the ants from taking over.

Treatment After an Invasion

Ants communicate by leaving scent trails for others in their colony to follow. To stop the trail of ants that are already in your house wet a paper towel with soapy water and wipe down all of the surfaces that have ant trails. Spraying the trails with window cleaner is also effective. In addition,Treatment Required After Ant Invaded Your Home Articles chalk, baby powder, cinnamon, and vinegar are great household items that can prevent ants from picking up the trail. For example, if you draw a line of chalk across the ant trail and they will no longer be able to follow it. Other treatments will take time to work, so continue cleaning up ant trails as they appear.

Bait is an effective way to eliminate an ant problem at the source. Generally baits are a mixture of food to attract them and chemicals to poison them. When worker ants collect the bait they bring it back and distribute the poison to the rest of the colony. Bait should be placed in places where ants are entering your space, but be careful to make them inaccessible to children or pets. Try following the ant trials back to their entry points and place bait there for them to find. When properly used, bait is safer than spray poison methods and provides a more specific attack on the colony. A few prepackaged brands that can be found at the store are Grant's Kills Ants, Hotshot MaxAttrax ant bait, Drax Ant Kil Gel, Maxforce Ant Killer Bait Stations, and Zep ant bait stations.

Sprays can also be used outdoors to prevent ants from entering your space.  Professional or commercial sprays such as Terro Ant Killer should be applied to the outside perimeter of the space around the foundation. Spraying inside is not usually necessary. Applying spray to the perimeter of the house isn’t as effective as using bait because only the soldier ants are the only ants affected and the rest of the colony will persist.

Preventing Future Invasions

Generally when ants intrude they are looking for something to eat. You can keep them at bay by making sure that sweet foods such as sugar, honey, soda, and juice are sealed tightly. Cleaning up any food on the counters or out in the open can reduce how attractive your space is to the ants. Also, remove any garbage surrounding your space that may be attracting them in the first place.

Check for possible points of entry that ants might be using to access your space.  Caulking with silica gel can be used to seal cracks and crevasses where pests get in. Be sure to be extra thorough when sealing off the kitchen, pantry, basement or any other places where food is kept.
