For those of us in the western world, managing a garden with so many winter months can be daunting and entail hardships. This is when the greenhouse can come to the rescue - a perfect solution to gardening when cold temperatures come in to play.

You can extend the growing period a great deal by using a greenhouse and some plants can be produced throughout the year.
You can cultivate your own mini garden that mimics those of warmer climes - plants such as eggplant and melons don't have to just exist in your dreams, they will thrive in a well-maintained greenhouse.

Be sure to control the temperature within your greenhouse.

During winter months, temperatures ranging from 30 to 40degrees more than the outside temperature are recommended, but the same temperatures can pose a risk to plants in much warmer months.

If we are lucky to have a hot summer, take extra care with your greenhouse friends as just like us, they too can burn. So what can you do to prevent this?

Try throwing a cloth over the greenhouse to offer shade and reduce an increase in heat.
Furthermore, be strategic when building or putting up your greenhouse.
Its exposure to the sun will play a huge role to the internal temperatures year round.
Southern facing roofs will absorb the most sun to provide ample solar power when needed.

If vegetables are your main priority, the greenhouse will allow you to plant seeds much earlier than if you were to plant them outside.

Your alternative is to buy them as young plants from garden centers or nurseries, but as some of you will already be aware - this can run up costs that don't compliment your budget.

A greenhouse will cut the costs in the long run as you nurture your own plants from the seed, without concerns of baneful chills.

It's also worth mention, that aside from the economical benefits, the range of vegetables and fruits that you can grow is much greater than if you were to seek out young plants from nurseries - many of which don't cultivate the more exquisite or unique varieties that are available.

Tomatoes, lettuces, strawberries, and peppers are just a few salad plants and fruits that you could grow throughout the year in your greenhouse, not to mention all the herbs you could experiment with.

These items will vary in cost in the supermarket depending on the time of year, but you don't have to worry when you choose to grow them instead - offering a yearlong economic supply.

If you are a budding gardener or an old-timer who is looking to lower the long-term costs of maintaining a vegetable garden, don't concern yourself with the initial cost of a greenhouse.

It may put you out a little at first, but listen to those who are already running a successful greenhouse - like me, they can tell you the savings you make further down the line are well worth it.
