The Truth About Tummy Tucks

What to expect from a tummy tuck procedure and why the procedure is popular.

The last ten pounds are the hardest to loose and sometimes that little bit of hanging gut just won’t respond to any amount of diet or exercise. You hate wearing a swim suite because that extra piece of flab makes you feel fat and unattractive and yet the reality is it’s probably not fat, its more likely a combination of extra skin, some fatty cell deposits and stretched out muscle that didn’t snap back into place. This unsightly flab can be caused by several things including weight fluctuations and the after affects of pregnancy on the body.

And unfortunately once you have that extra bump it can be almost impossible to get rid of it on your own. A tummy tuck is generally part of the package for a mommy make over for a very good reason. Pregnancy may be wonderful and all but the affect it leaves behind on your body- including saggy breast and a saggy belly are less than an ideal way to go on with the remaining good years of your life.

A tummy tuck can be done as a stand alone procedure or in conjunction with another cosmetic procedure such as liposuction. Your plastic surgeon can advise you if you need both procedures or just a tummy tuck done to get the results you want.
If you do decide to have a tummy tuck you aren’t alone. In 2010, this type of procedure made the top five most popular cosmetic procedure lists. In fact there were 116,000 tucks done in 2010, up one percent from 2009. There were 203,000 liposuction procedures done in the same year, an increase of two percent from 2009.

The procedure itself works by removing the extra skin and fat and tightening the abdominal wall muscles up to give you a smooth profile once more. After surgery you should expect to experience some bruising and swelling and you will probably go home with a drainage tube in place the first twenty four hours or so. This is normal with any surgical procedure and you should expect to have the bandages, elastic wrap and drainage tube removed in stages over the next week or two as your incisions heal.
Your total recovery time will be any where from one to three weeks, dependent on your overall health, any complications you may experience, and if you have other procedures done at the same time such as liposuction or a breast lift.

Be prepared to have some down time and have the household help on hand that you will need to recover. You will probably not be able to do much for yourself at first, including walking straight as your abdominal muscles heal. Despite this your doctor will strongly encourage you to walk around and avoid complete bed rest since this can actually led to blood clots forming and clots can be fatal.
