There’s no better feeling than having your aching muscles stroked and softened under the ministrations of a trained massage therapist. After dealing with all the daily chores at home and the stresses at work, getting a massage is one of the best ways to relax and pamper yourself. But do you know how the science or art of giving a massage started out? And how about the increasingly popular male massages? What makes them different from a traditional massage? Read on to find out.

How the Art of Massages Started

Call it the art or the science of massage – but in its basic form, massages involve the manipulation of one’s muscles to promote well-being, relaxation and healing. So where exactly can the origin of massages be traced? During the ancient Roman, Grecian, Japanese, Mesopotamian and Egyptian civilizations, massages were already performed. It was part of a woman’s beauty regimen wherein the oil of myrrh was applied to the part of the body which is being massaged. The popularity of massages has then spread to other parts of the world until being a massage therapist turned into the career that it is today.

The 3 General Types of Massages

There are dozens of individual types of massages, but it can generally be divided into three categories:
1.    Eastern Massages
Eastern massages involve the techniques used in China and most parts of Asia. For each of these countries, there is an ancient massage technique which is solely focused on healing, relieving stress and creating balance in an individual. These massage techniques may not necessarily involve direct manipulation of the muscles for healing or relaxation purposes, but they are ultimately relaxing.
2.    Western Massages
Meanwhile, Western massages typically have a medical goal. Take sports massages as an example. When an athlete has been injured or has to go through a strenuous workout, a type of massage which helps soften injured or tired muscles is administered. The goal of the massage is to send more oxygen to muscle fibers so that pain can be eliminated.
3.    Erotic or Sensual Massage
Finally, there’s the erotic or sensual massage which has a goal of helping a person have sexual release. It is also said to help produce better, longer-lasting orgasms.

The Increasing Popularity of Male Massages

Now that you already have an idea about the general types of massages, there are a couple of massage therapists that you can choose to give you the treatment: males or masseurs; and female or masseuses. The edge that male massage therapists have over their female counterpart is that they have greater muscle power. This is the reason why masseurs excel in giving deep-tissue massages.
The popularity of male massages has increased over the past ten years, mainly because more and more clients are becoming more open to the prospect of receiving a male massage. There used to be a time when female clients felt uncomfortable getting massages from masseurs – and male clients balked at the thought of getting a massage from another man.

There are also sexual connotations involved in getting a massage from male therapists back in the days.  Today, however, masseurs have already established a reputation as being a legitimate part of the professional massage industryFree Reprint Articles, so their work is slowly but surely gaining popularity.
