Acidity

 Acidity is related to heartburn and gas formation in stomach. In acidity, acid reflux or gastroesopohageal reflux disease, or more commonly known as urdhva gata amalpitta in ayurveda, there is a movement of gastric juices (carrying acid) from the stomach into the lower esophagus (food pipe).

This is a condition which is caused when acidic contents in stomach (hydrochloric acid) move upward into the esophagus and making it dysfunctional. Understanding the right treatment at right time and causes of any disease, like acidity or acid reflux, is very helpful for effective treatments. In ayurveda it is considerd to be caused by the aggarvation of pitta dosha that is responsible for burning sensation caused in the chest region.
 Acidity is also commonly known as hyperacidity or acid dyspepsia.

Causes

1. Excessive smoking and drinking alcohol
2. Gastro duodenal (peptic) ulcer
3. Hyper secretion of hydrochloric acid
4. Reflux of gastric acid
5. Not eating on time
6. Eating fried and spicy food regularly

Signs and Symptoms

 Acidity is responsible for symptoms like

1. Dyspepsia, heartburn and
2. The formation of ulcers (erosion of the lining of the stomach or intestines).
3. It tends to have a much higher incidence in highly emotional and nervous individuals.
4. Lack of appetite.

Herbal Remedies for acidity

1. Chew some basil leaves. It is best natural herbal remedy for acidity.
2. Take Harad (Terminalia chebula) after meal. It is also effectine natural remedy for heartburn.
3. Mix one tsp juice of chebulic myroblan with one tsp of amla (Indian gooseberry) juice and drink it for acidity relief.

Ayurvedic Remedies

Take dried blossom of tulsi, rind of the neem tree, black pepper and peepal in even quantity and grind them to powder form. Take 3 gms of this powder every morning and evening with plain water. Take a tiny piece of jaggery (gur) every hour. Just keep it in the mouth and slowly suck it till acidity subsides.
Chewing a piece of harad is an age old remedy.
The best way to treat this trouble is to have lots of fresh radishes. For taste you may add carrots and tomatoes but not salt. The chlorine discharged by radish is very effective to clear the extra acidic contents from the blood.
Drink coconut water 3-4 times a day.
Have a plateful of water melon or cucumber (kheera) every hour.
