Step 1 – During college, students who are interested in a career in the field should major in psychology or a similar mental health study. Students should make sure to take as many child development classes as possible, while keeping on top of a high grade point average. Talk to school admissions counselors to determine the requirements to complete the necessary curriculum. If you already have an idea of the graduate program you’d like to attend, this information will aid you in meeting all requirements. 

Step 2 – In addition, you will want to enroll in a statistics course in college. As research plays a rather large role in the field, understanding statistics will prove itself an extremely helpful skill upon entering your graduate program. Step 4 – During your second semester of junior year, apply to take the GRE exam. This exam is required for admission to many of the top graduate programs. The exam will measure aspects such as critical thinking, verbal reasoning, writing skills, and more. Take the time to review practice tests that are offered online and study hard to make the grade. 

Step 5 – When senior year rolls around, apply to the graduate program of your choice. You may choose many, or just one. Make a point to apply to institutions that offer specified programs regarding your career interests and aspirations, and that allow you opportunities to work with children in a direct manner. In order to lower expenses, you may want to check into whether the institution offers research assistant positions. 

Step 6 – Evaluate whether it would be best to earn a master’s degree, or if a longer school stay would be best in order to earn PH.D and Psy.D degrees. The last two options may take a bit longer to obtain, but will expand the types of positions available to you, while increasing the potential earnings you can obtain. 

Step 7 – Once you have obtained your graduate degree, you will need to apply for state licensing. Once you have passed the necessary examination, you will officially be deemed a psychologist.
