Bedwetting

Bedwetting is a very common pre-adolescent problem. Actually, until the age of six years, bedwetting is considered to be a very normal phenomenon, which phases out with time.

But about one-tenth of all children continue to wet their bed even after they have grown out of their first six years of life.

Types of Bedwetting

The two main types of Bedwetting are as follows :-

(i) Primary Nocturnal Enuresis – This is the condition when the person wets the bed almost every night. This condition is usually found in children.

(ii) Secondary Nocturnal Enuresis – This is the condition when the person wets the bed only on some nights. There are long spells when the person does not urinate at night, but then does so one particular night. This is generally brought on due to emotional stress. It is more commonly found in adults, but can be seen in children too.

Causes

Bedwetting in children may be due to immature nervous system due to which the child is not able to feel that his bladder is full.
- Sometimes it is also because of small bladder due to which the bladder is not able to hold all the urine produced during the night.- In a very rare case it may be due to some defects in the urinary system.- Some medical conditions like urinary tract infection, constipation, diabetes, sickle-cell anemia, or epilepsy may also cause bedwetting.- Hormonal factors, wherein there is inadequate antidiuretic hormone. This hormone reduces the amount of urine produced by the kidneys.- Spinal cord abnormalities.- Genetic factors.- Deep Sleep.

Signs & Symptoms

The most common symptom of bedwetting is uncontrolled and unintentional bedwetting while sleeping.

Bedwetting Remedies

Herbal Medicines

   1. A teaspoonful of pure honey should be given to the child before going to bed.
   2. Sarshapa i.e., Sarson powder, well mixed in a cup of milk, if given at night before going to bed, stops the wetting.

Ayurvedic Remedies

   1. Shilajitvadi Vati ½ tablet twice a day with some warm milk usually gives good results.
   2. Chandraprabha Vati is also a good remedy in this condition. ½ tablet twice a day is given.
   3. Neo tablet (Charak) in the dose of 1 to 2 tablets twice daily for two to three months gives good results.

Do's & Don'ts

   1. The child/teenager should not be scolded in the evening or before going to bed.
   2. He should be asked to urinate before going to bed.
   3. Oral liquids like milk, water etc., should be restricted after 4 p.m.
   4. Food items like potato, spicy food, etc., should not be givenArticle Submission, as these cause gas formation.
   5. Evening walks should be encouraged.
