Blepharoplasty - Who Gets it and Why?There’s no denial that plastic surgery is pretty mainstream. While we’re always hearing about how many people are getting work like a breast lift done these days, who are these women and what is their motivation? Eyelid surgery is frequently one of the top five surgeries performed in the country during a given year. What makes it unique is that in recent years it has been the second or third most popular surgery with men. Only about ten percent of the approximately 10 million surgeries performed annually are done on men. The procedure is also the number one surgery performed on people 65 and older. Although, it’s performed on people of any age who have inherited dark circles and puffiness around their eyes. The surgery is designed to reverse the loss of elasticity that causes one’s eyelids to fall during the aging process. It can also fix the excess skin that can accumulate around the eyelids making the eyes seem lost and less energetic. In some cases, this removal of excess skin and fat can actually improve vision in addition to appearance. The eyes are where most attention is given during conversation. So it is no wonder that as we age it can become uncomfortable to have our eyes to start looking wrinkled, worn and tired looking – and giving others the impression that this state of our eyes reflects who we are and how we feel. An informal on-line poll of recipients indicated that about 65 percent of percent of blespharoplasty recipients said that the surgery was worth it. This is the same rate as found from Botox patients and compared to about an 80 percent positive response from face lift recipients. . Those who are most satisfied with the results usually understand the limitations of blespharoplasty. They know that it won’t make them look like a different person. It probably won’t make them look 20 years younger. But it generally will make a person look more rested and less haggard. Perhaps most importantly, recipients are quick to point out that their decision to undergo eyelid surgery for done for them personally, not because someone else in their life wanted them to look better. Rather, they wanted to feel refreshed and experience the self confidence that comes when you feel you look your best. One additional important word of advice from blepharoplasty recipients is to take time choosing a doctor, one who specializes in eyelid surgery, as this can be a complex procedure. And be sure to educate yourself about the risks , the recovery process and the resulting
scarring. The most satisfied consumers are usually those who are the
best educated so evaluate the pros and cons of any surgery
