Glucose is the primary source of energy for the body’s cells, and blood lipids (Lipids are a broad group of naturally occurring molecules which includes fats, waxes, sterols, fat-soluble vitamins, monoglycerides, diglycerides, phospholipids, and others) are primarily a compact energy store. Glucose is transported from the intestines or liver to body cells via the bloodstream, and is made available for cell absorption via the hormone insulin, produced by the body primarily in the pancreas.
Blood sugar levels outside the normal range may be an indicator of a medical condition. A persistently high level is referred to as hyperglycemia; low levels are referred to as hypoglycemia.
Hyperglycemia
Hyperglycemia or high blood sugar is a condition in which an excessive amount of glucose circulates in the blood plasma.
If levels remain too high, appetite is suppressed over the short term. Long-term hyperglycemia causes many of the long-term health problems associated with diabetes, including eye, kidney, heart disease and nerve damage.
Hypoglycemia Hypoglycemia is the medical term for a state produced by a lower than normal level of blood glucose.
If blood sugar levels drop too low, a potentially fatal condition called hypoglycemia develops. Symptoms may include lethargy, impaired mental functioning, irritability, shaking, twitching, weakness in arm and leg muscles, pale complexion, sweating, paranoid or aggressive mentality and loss of consciousness.
Jamun (Syzigium cumini), a native fruit of India has been known to help control the sugar levels in the body – the natural way. Ayurveda, the oldest form of medicine has numerous references about this wonder fruit’s ability to prevent and control diabetes. Jamun fruit is rich in glucosides which prevent the break down of starch into sugars in the body thereby helping control sugar levels in the body. They also activate the pancreas inducing it to produce more insulin. The fruit is also very rich in antioxidants and minerals. Besides controlling sugar levels, the fruit is also helpful in curbing certain skin infections and is an excellent digestive supplement.
