Make sure you have someone drive you home after your operation and stay with you for about 24 hours. If your operation is performed with general anesthesia, you may feel tired and groggy for a day or two. If you feel nauseous after having surgery, this can be managed with anti-nausea medication.

After your operation, you may feel some discomfort. The discomfort can range from very mild to severe and it usually lasts anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. The amount of discomfort you experience will depend on the placement and size of your implants. The bigger your implants, the more uncomfortable you will feel. You will probably experience some bruising after your breast augmentation surgery. Your skin will stretch in order to accommodate your new breast implants. The red color and sunburned feeling are caused by stretching. This is a normal part of the recovery process. A moisturizer with aloe vera or shea butter may help.

After the implants have been placed, the incisions are carefully sutured. The stitches that your plastic surgeon uses to close the pockets around the breast implants will dissolve on their own or need to be removed by the doctor 7 to 10 days after your operation. Keep in mind that most plastic surgeons use stitches that dissolve on their own.

A compression bra or compression bandages are used immediately after the operation to prevent fluid and blood accumulation, keep the breast implants in place, and speed up the healing process. If compression bandages are applied, they're usually removed within a few days and replaced with a compression bra. The bra is usually worn for about two weeks after surgery. A bra with underwire shouldn't be worn during this time.

It is common for patients to experience swelling after having surgery. To control swelling, you should use ice or cold packs. Place the cold pack on your breasts for at least the first 48 hours of recovery. Let the cold packs sit for about 15 minutes. Take a 40 min break before you apply it again.

Some patients experience numbness in the breasts from bruised nerves. Some patients also experience electrical shock sensations and stinging pains for a few weeks after having surgery. These feelings mean that nerve activity is returning. To go on, the position and size of your breast implants may influence your risk of nipple numbness after your operation.
