Breast augmentation used to be the province of the rich and famous, but that is no longer the case. With advanced techniques and increasing popularity, prices for implants are coming down all the time. Women of all ages and statuses are getting implants, each of them for their own reasons. Those reasons may have everything or nothing to do with personal vanity. Everyone needs to feel comfortable in their own skin, and sometimes plastic surgery can help make that a reality. 
Seeing as how there are several options out there for women interested in enhancement surgery, it can be difficult to decide what type to get, even after being sure that surgery is the right path for you. The only way to make an informed decision is to make yourself aware of the options and facts beforehand, and then speak with your surgeon about the right choice. Don’t let yourself be pressured into getting something you don’t want. While a qualified surgeon will be able to offer the best advice possible, you ultimately have to live with the results, so don’t let anyone make your decisions for you.
Saline Implants
For many years, saline implants were the only option available to women who wanted breast augmentation. Saline is often the preferred method for health reasons. Because the implant is made up of a salt water solution, a rupture in the implant is relatively harmless. The solution is simply absorbed back into the body. Saline implants are also less expensive than their silicone counterparts. If there is a drawback to saline, it is that some women find that these implants don’t look or feel as natural as silicone. Sometimes the end result can look slightly wrinkled, particularly in women who go from a very small breast size to very large. 
Silicone Implants
From 1992 to 2006, silicone implants were banned in the United States due to health concerns from ruptured implants. The ban was lifted by the FDA when the next generation of silicone gel implants came out, making this form of breast augmentation much more safe than before. Silicone is now the most popular form of implants by a wide margin, mostly due to the fact that they tend to look much better than saline. They are more expensive, but many women find the extra cost to be worth it. 
Breast augmentation and, in fact, plastic surgery of any kind, is a personal choice that should be taken under the most serious of advisement. Even so, potential candidates should be aware that thousands of these surgeries are done each year, with most women experiencing few, if any, problems with the result.
