Breast Augmentation - The Evolution

Breast augmentation has evolved tremendously over the years. This complicated, yet standard procedure has been perfected over time with advances in the silicone gel implants, surgical procedures, and recovery. Whether you choose silicone or saline solution implants, these advancements have made this simple procedure much easier, especially when it comes to choosing the right size, the right price, and the right doctor.

Silicone implants, which according to some patients have a more natural feel, come pre-filled. In the past, doctors were challenged with fitting the implant into a small incision just above the breast crease. This proved difficult because surgeons were tasked with fitting the enlargements into a small incision without compromising its sterility. Their general use was banned in the 90’s due to health and safety fears.

In 2006, after years of thorough research and studies found no connection between silicone and autoimmune disorders or cancer from ruptured implants, they were reinstated for general plastic surgery. In addition, plastic surgeons have begun using a funnel tool that allows for a smaller incision, and greater ease when inserting the silicone into the patient. The funnel’s advantages are two-fold; it limits stress to the shell and maintains the sterile nature of the implant.
Saline solution implants were introduced in 2000. They have a less-natural feel and contour shape, but were considered much safer at the time because they are filled with a more natural salt solution. Although they are filled with saline, the outer shell is composed of silicone. However, the implants are first inserted into the patient, and then filled to the desired size with saline solution. Because the implants are filled after insertion, they require a smaller incision, and can be adjusted by a doctor post-surgery with a syringe to put more liquid in, or take more liquid out. If these rupture, it is more obvious because the body will simply absorb the solution, giving the effect of one breast looking smaller than the other.

Patients also now have more post-operative options that will ensure a quick, less-painful recovery. Some doctors have elected to use a pain suppression pump. This tool is comprised of two small catheters placed in each breast. For 72 hours, an IV drip will administer pain medication directly to the surgical site to ease the pain during recovery. In addition, many doctors are providing their patients with special post-operation bras that serve a number of purposes including reducing swelling, increasing circulation, and decreasing pain. Using the bra during recovery time could range from a few days to weeks. While still considered optional, these recovery techniques have become more widely accepted, and a number of doctors have chosen to include them in the cost of surgery, so that patients may focus on recovery.

As a breast augmentation patient, it is important to remember the risks involved with any surgery. However, having a knowledgeable, certified and licensed doctor can take some of the worry and anxiety out of the equation.
