A patient would choose a size and then the doctor would go from there, determining how far out the implant would come when choosing the material. Nowadays, patients can choose both their size and their profile. What are the differences?

Profile, in terms of breast augmentation, is a descriptor of how far the implant will project. You may have seen women with very large breasts with a moderate to low profile. That is to say, their breasts tend to spread to the sides, rather than point to the front. When making your decision about how you want your implants to look, you can have a certain say in the matter when it comes to how far you want yours to project. Different body types may look differently with various profiles, with many doctors having their own recommendations when it comes to what looks natural and what looks too fake. Of course, then there are those women who desire a “fake” look when it comes to their surgery.

High Profile

A high profile breast augmentation will incorporate the highest degree of projection in comparison with the base diameter of the implant. These implants will be more cone shaped than those of a lower profile. This means some degree of shaping to the material. In addition to creating a certain look, some women prefer to go with a high profile implant because it has been shown to reduce the rippling effect that is sometimes seen, especially in saline surgeries. Women who are shy and don’t want unwanted attention focused on their chest may wish to forgo this option, however.

Moderate Profile

A moderate profile breast augmentation is considered the base standard. If you do not make your preferences known or aren’t given the choice, this is typically what you will get. At the same time, this is what many women want anyway. Doctors typically find that the moderate profile implant gives the patient the most natural looking breasts. It also provides for additional volume to the middle portion of the breast, sometimes contributing to the appearance of a wider chest. For those women with narrow clavicles and a narrow frame, this can often create a favorable illusion.

Low Profile

Many doctors refer to low profile implants as the “natural” look. This is often chosen by women who don’t want it to appear as if they’ve had any work done. They may simply want to fill out their clothes a little better, or maybe look better in a bikini. They do not want their coworkers, for example, asking them about their plastic surgery choices.
