Breast implants are medical devices used in the operation known as augmentation or a “boob job.” There are different varieties on the market and research continues to examine the pros and cons of each type. Women have been trying to increase the size of their bustlines for eons. Options to do this have ranged from sensible to crazy. Padded bras, falsies, the injection of silicone or even peanut oil, creams, lotions and potions have all been tried with varying degrees of success. The products filled with silicone were even pulled off the market for a while so that more extensive research and clinical trials could be performed. Here are some of the more common rumors and myths surrounding these figure enhancing items:

- They’re dangerous: This rumor is linked to accusations made back in the late 1980’s. Claims from some women that breast implants caused immune disorders and other diseases made splashy headlines back then. The hysteria caused the FDA to yank them from the market in order to study them more closely. Scientific studies determined that the items were safe and not linked to the disorders.

- They look fake: This is not true of the majority of augmentation outcomes. It’s important that patients select the correct size of breast implants for their body’s proportion in order to establish a harmonious look with their musculature and bone structure. If too large of a size is chosen, they indeed may look unnatural. A consultation with a reputable cosmetic surgeon will answer a woman’s questions about proper sizing.

- They are all a lady needs to return saggy bosoms to perkiness: This isn’t true. If the skin has lost elasticity and becomes extremely droopy, a mastopexy may be needed as well. - These products are illegal and must be obtained in a foreign country: Again, a rumor linked to the 1980’s hysteria when the items were removed from the market. The Food and Drug Administration is a government agency which oversees the safety of foods, medications and medical devices. In the years 2000 and 2006, both saline and silicone filled implants were deemed safe and allowed back on the public market.

- A boob job will save a marriage: This rumor may actually have some validity. If a woman feels very self conscious about her flattened chest after weaning several children, she may withdraw sexually. A marriage needs a good deal of physical intimacy in order to thrive. If augmentation makes a woman feel confident about her looks, it will not only help her marriage but allow her to achieve success in all arenas of her life.

- Women have boob jobs performed for others: Many people think that all bustline enhancement is done by a patient to please other people. This is simply not true. Most females choose to have their bosom augmented so that they will feel better about themselves. If others are pleased with the results, it’s just a perk.
