Breast implants are the most popular and standard option for breast
augmentation. Although there are natural options, breast implants can
produce the best results. In the past, there had been some concerns with
safety, considering some patients suspected that the silicone implants
caused devastating side effects. However, both saline and silicone have
been well-researched and approved for use as breast implants.
Silicone implants, which come pre-filled, tend to have a more natural
feel. This option was introduced to the general public in the 1960's. At
the time, doctors were challenged with fitting the silicone implant
into a small incision that will not cause too much scarring.
Additionally, the FDA discontinued the general use of silicone implants
in the 90’s due to safety and health concerns, such as autoimmune
diseases and cancer. However, thorough research and studies proved there
was no connection between silicone implants and any of these health
issues. In 2006, the FDA reinstated silicone implants for general use,
which opened new avenues for plastic surgeons to develop techniques to
insert the pre-filled silicone implants without causing scarring.

because the implants can be filled to the desired size after it is
inserted into the breast tissue. Unlike saline, silicone solution is not
absorbed by the body in the event of a rupture. Therefore, patients
with silicone breast implants must visit their doctor for an MRI every
year for three years after the breast augmentation to detect any
ruptures. Since the body does not absorbed the silicone solution from
these implants, there may be some scar tissue and breast hardening as a
result of a rupture.
Saline solution implants were introduced around the same time as
silicone implants. Although they are considered much safer because the
saline is a simple salt solution, they do not have the natural look and
feel of silicone. The outer shell of the saline implant is indeed made
of silicone. However, once the implants are inserted into the breast
tissue, they can be filled to any desired size with saline solution.
Saline implants require a smaller incisions because they can be filled
after insertion. Additionally, the surgoen can adjust the implants
post-surgery with a simple syringe filled with more saline solution.
With their natural solution, there is less of a health concern if they
rupture because the solution is simply absorbed in to the body, also
making the rupture more obvious.
Breast implants are a safe option for surgical breast enhancement.
However, patients should know about the different options and the risks
involved with each option. While silicone implants are more natural,
there may be some additional precautions that patients may not be aware
