Breast Lift Benefits and Risks
A breast lift, or mastoplexy, is designed to raise or reshape fallen sagging breasts. Often clients seek mastoplexy after a significant weight loss and after pregnancy, especially after nursing, but it does not need to be affiliated with these issues to be recommended.
No procedure, however, is without risk, and the general rules of surgery apply even in this elective procedure. Though not common or frequent, infection, bleeding, or poor anesthetic reactions can occur with this and any surgery. In relation to the cosmetic aspect of the process, it is possible but not likely to lose nipple sensation or the ability to nurse, though mastoplexy is not suggested for those who know or think they may become pregnant as the associated weight gain, weight loss and nursing is likely to negate the aesthetic outcome of a breast lift.
Doctor’s orders should be considered an extension of the surgery itself and followed precisely for the best outcome. Not adhering to post –operative instructions can cause undesirable final results such as stretching of scar tissue; patients who experience this often opt for revision surgery not only again exposing the patient to general surgical risks, but also adding scars and scar tissue. Any and all risks are significantly reduced if the patient self-advocates well and adheres to pre-and post-operative instructions.
There are several incision options for the procedure, and pre-operative counseling will determine the patients final expectations and, thus, the type of lift that is best suited for the patient’s needs. The physical and emotional benefits that a mastoplexy has to offer far outweigh the minor risks affiliated with the operation. The results of a breast lift are not permanent, but if a client has realistic expectations and follows the surgeon’s instructions for both preparation and recovery, the client will enjoy the cosmetic lift and retain the results for several years.
