Brow Lift for Vision Correction

Brow lifts, also known as forehead lifts or browplasty, are common among older clients who because of the effects of aging and gravity around the eyes and the forehead may have impaired vision. If vision is being affected, the brow lift will be considered a reconstructive procedure due to medical needs. Other procedures can be combined with the brow lift in order to both enhance vision and aesthetics, and the recovery time and longevity can vary.

Brow ptosis is a common condition in which the eyebrow sags, and it is possible that the sagging can hinder vision. A brow lift is the go to reconstructive procedure for correcting this condition. There are three methods of elevating the brow to accomplish doctor and patient goals: the coronal brow lift, the direct brow lift, and the in-direct brow lift. For the coronal lift, the incision is made on the hairline, and is often applied when the individual has a high forehead. The scarring is usually covered by the hairline, and some benefits of this option include a reduction in forehead and nose bridge wrinkles. The direct brow lift involves removing excess skin above the eyebrows, while an in-direct browplasty makes an incision at the eyelid crease. A pre-operative consultation will decide which procedure is the most suitable for each patient. 

This procedure can be combined with others such as blepharoplasty, but it is important to note whether the additional procedure is being done for cosmetic or reconstructive reasons as it will affect insurance coverage. 

Most patients are ultimately satisfied with the results of browplasty, however recovery time is extensive. The recipient can expect swelling and bruising for up to ten days, and the recovery period can involve bandages, dressings, and drain tubes. Initial recovery will seem to have hindered patient’s abilities beyond the original complaint, and major physical activities will need to be avoided for several weeks after the surgery. Traditionally, a full recovery will be made in two to three weeks if doctor directives are followed. Again, most patients are overly satisfied with the decision to have the surgery although a full recovery revealing the full effect will take several months.
It is important to note that aging will continue, and thus the results are not permanent. 
The longevity of a brow lift varies by patient, and lifestyle and heredity play a major part in projecting that particular timeline. If a patient adheres to post-operative recommendations, the results, of course, will last longer. Those who work in harsh weather conditions or in physical manual laboring occupations as well as those who are genetically predisposed to sagging and drooping and eyelids are likely to enjoy positive effects of a brow lift for a shorter amount of time. A lift does not halt the aging process, and a patient may need to consider repeat surgery in the future.
