Diverticulitis is a form of condition that results from industrialization and change in eating habits due to processed foods. Starting from U.S. this condition reaches the Western countries also. As milling removes the valuable fibre content so there is a shortage of fibre in the early 20th century in the world.

Diverticulitis results from a condition named diverticulosis, which is normally seen in aged people particularly over 60. Diverticulosis is very common condition in aged people and half of the people in this age group (over 60) are suffering from this. Diverticulosis causes the small pouches in the intestinal tracts of the people. These pouches are called diverticula and these are actually harmless, even most people don’t know they have some pouches. However, if diverticula become infected then it causes pain in the abdominal region of the person. Very few people experience diverticulitis develops from diverticula and majority of the cases are mild which can be cure by rest and change in diet. Serious cases may require surgery to get relief from pain.

If your doctor says that you are suffering from diverticulitis and this is a mild case then he may suggest some changes in your diet. The fibre content in your body is low, but even then doctor suggests you to stop taking fibre, it may increase your pain. This process is necessary to include role of antibiotics to kill infection in your body. Half of the patients may cure this at home, so it is wise to take diverticulitis diet as recommended by your doctor. When your body is free from infection and diverticulosis does not cause any problem, then try to concentrate on prevention but you must take your doctor advice before making any diet plan as prevention is better than cure.

The cause of diverticulitis is the shortage of fibre content in the body. So try to eat high fibre foods like fresh fruits, vegetables and grains and this is best diverticulitis diet. You may take any fibre supplement as it may serve your purpose. Psyllium is an excellent source of fibre and it is best for cleaning the digestive system as it forms a gel like texture when mix with water. Water plays a major role in producing soft stool. So try to drink as much water as you can daily. By throwing water out after very half an hour, you are able to keep your bowel and digestive system clean and in good shape too.
