Even if they might not like it, we get to know if any celebs turn out to be alcoholic or drug addict. When we discover that any celeb had surreptitiously abused alcohol for a good part of his or her life, we do get taken aback.

Outpatient alcohol rehab centers in California must be replete with stories wherein celebs might have been a part of any treatment program. Let’s take a look at some of those celebrities whom we didn’t know initially were alcoholic, but without casting aspersions on them, of course:

Stephen King: The king of ‘horror writing’ who conjured up the most contemporary eerie stories and enthralled the readers for long was an alcoholic. With the help and support from his family, he managed to overcome alcoholism and has remained sober since.

Robin Williams: There was no sign of waning of the love and support from his fans when they came to know that the actor actually struggled with alcoholism and drug addiction early in his career. However, his suicide in 2014 came as a jolt to many of his fans.

Ben Affleck: Still not many know that Ben Affleck entered rehab for alcoholism way back in 2001. The Armageddon star struggled with his drinking habits, but managed to go sober. Alcoholism never came in the way of his celluloid success and he continued to enjoy his stature as a movie star.

Michael J. Fox: The adorable romantic star of yesteryears, whom we currently know of his involvement with the Michael J. Fox foundation, was also an alcoholic. He took to alcohol when he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. He drowned himself in alcohol to cope with the fear and uncertainty relating to the disease.

Jamie Lee Curtis: A celeb with such great acting prowess, Jamie Lee Curtis was also an alcoholic. An obsession to look good led her to addiction. She now preaches self-acceptance. It is not known whether she had been to any outpatient alcohol rehabilitation in California, but she managed to stay sober so far.

Diana Ross: Dubbed as the “Female Entertainer of the Century”, Diana is undeniably one of the most popular singing sensations of all times. But she too was an alcoholic and had to enter a rehab in 2002.

Mel Gibson: The “Brave Heart” from Hollywood identified with his Greek God looks is a celeb whom we all love to watch. His arrest for driving under influence (DUI) in 2006 came as a surprise to many. It brought to light his episodes of alcoholism and made him experience ignominy.

The list is endless with some shocking names, like Johnny Depp, Mickey Mantle, Eminem, Anthony Hopkins and Daniel Radcliffe, who were alcoholics. Most of them could overcome their alcoholism and remain sober.
