Chelating Agents and Their Advantages

Chelation has a very vast use in the field of medicine. It is being employed for the alleviation of not only poisoning from heavy metals, but also for the treatment of a number of diseases. Chelation is brought about by chelating agents which are the actual components which show their effects inside the body.

Chelating agents are essentially metal ions which are bonded to a number of ‘ligands’ or carrier ions. There are a specific number of sites present on the ion surface or the ionic charge number, which decides the number of ligands that can associate with a particular metal ion. A lot of different kinds of chelating agents are employed in the field of medicine. After ingestion, these agents solubilize at gastric pH and have profound effects on the unwanted elements in the stomach and intestine.

Out of all the chelating agents employed for the process of Chelation, the most commonly employed and the most highly effective is EDTA. It can be administered to a patient either by formulation into an oral dosage form or by the parenteral route. It enters the body through either of the routes and gets attached to the poisonous elements or heavy metals in the blood, thereby removing them. It can do so by two ways:
•    The poisonous or harmful elements are present in the form of free radicals and thus, EDTA is able to effectively form a complex with them or,
•    EDTA gets attached to specific receptors on the cell surface, thereby opening the calcium channel and resulting in a cleansing action of the blood.

So either way, EDTA is able to effectively deal with the problem and provide the desired results. It helps to relax the arteries and provide for a better circulation of the blood in the body along with preventing any sort of deposition on the walls of the arteries and veins alike. Hence, EDTA is successfully able to enhance the deteriorating condition of a patient with serious CVS trouble.

In addition to the previously mentioned advantages of EDTA, it is also able to significantly help in improving the condition of diabetic patients, that is to say, it helps to stabilize the sugar levels in an individual. Chelating agents are also helpful in imparting certain memory enhancing features to an individual by mechanisms which have still not been studied properly. In shortArticle Search, the development of Chelation therapy has made it able to improve the health of an individual by significant levels.
