There are several different things your orthodontist can recommend if you or your child needs to correct a bite pattern.
The most common type of orthodontics devices are braces and retainers. Both of these devices work to create constant pressure on your teeth, which over time will force them into a better alignment pattern.
A retainer is normally only worn for a short amount of time based on what your doctor’s goals in using the device are. Your dentist may start by having the retainer worn for six month full time including during the daytime and then just have it worn at night while the patient sleeps for a few more months.
The other most common option to correct a bite is braces. Braces today come in a few different styles including the traditional stainless steel or titanium. Patients can also choose to have braces made of ceramic that are white or clear and not as easily identified as stainless steel braces are.
Another popular option, especially among adults who choose to get braces is Invisalign braces which are transparent plastic aligners which offer the advantage over traditional braces in the fact that they are less obvious than other options.
Which ever orthodontic device you end up choosing your dentist will work with you to create a treatment plan so you will know how long you will likely need to continue wearing your braces or retainer. For braces the length of time needed can vary depending on the degree and severity of misalignment from one year to two years. Patients with braces will need to see their orthodontist every few months to adjust the braces to keep the correct pressure in place.
Once your mouth has reached the proper alignment your doctor can easily and quickly remove your braces and you will be amazed at how wonderful a perfectly straight smile can look.
If you are considering braces bear in mind another benefit beyond the cosmetic aspect is the fact that if you have a misaligned jaw or bite you are probably wearing down your jaw bone and teeth at a faster rate and will eventually see some permanent damage from an untreated misalignment pattern.
