Dental Cleaning: Know What To Expect from Your Upcoming Appointment
If you have a dental cleaning scheduled, you should learn what will happen. This may help you feel prepared for the visit, and therefore calm.
Though your teeth will be thoroughly cleaned at the visit, you should still brush them before you go. This is a great way to show your practitioner that you at least try to keep up the health of your teeth, even if you do not keep all your appointments. Plus, it is just a good way to ensure that your breath is fresh, which your practitioner will certainly appreciate. Consider flossing, too, and be ready to let your dentist know how often you perform this chore since he or she will likely ask. Of course, the state of your teeth may give away the answer anyway.
Once you get to the dental cleaning appointment, you should be allowed to get comfortable in the chair. Even though the visit should only take about thirty minutes to an hour, most dentists want you to be able to enjoy it as much as possible, and this requires that you be somewhat comfortable and relaxed. You may even be able to watch television, even if the practitioner has to tilt your head upwards to clean your teeth, as many offices now offer televisions that tilt and swivel as needed so you can see the screen from any angle. If your dentist does not offer this kind of entertainment, you should at least be offered headphones so you can listen to music until the visit is over, as this can make it go by faster.
Some patients show up for the regular dental cleaning, only to find that it will be a lot more complicated than originally thought, as they need what is called a scaling and root planing. This is a longer procedure that provides a deeper clean than usual. You may need this if you have a lot of inflammation in the gums, as well as a buildup of plaque. This is most common in patients with gum disease, though it may also occur if you do not go to the dentist for a few years, as the plaque will just build up. Note that this procedure is usually more expensive than the typical dental cleaning, so be prepared to pay a little more, though insurance should cover most of it.
If you are nervous about your upcoming dentist visit, knowing what to expect should help you relax a bit. If you want to know more specific details, you can always call and ask your practitioner what will happen when you arrive. The procedure may differ depending on the office you go to, but in general, it is quite simple and your mouth should feel fresh afterward.
