Trying to decide how best to deal with missing teeth can be a difficult process. For many,Dental Implants or Dentures? Ask the Dentist Articles the embarrassment and discomfort of having an absent tooth is too much and they need some sort of medical treatment to address the situation. There are a number of different solutions for this particular problem but the question is whether dental implants or dentures are going to be a better option for each patient's particular case. Both offer benefits and drawbacks but for some the choice is clear. With some assistance from a dentist and some background information it is easy to decide what will work best as a choice of treatment.

The first thing to consider and to discuss with the doctor is how many teeth need to be replaced. First of all, if only one tooth has been lost or damaged, dental implants are the way to go. These offer a permanent crown that can be attached to the remaining tissue or fabricated to attach to a titanium base that is inserted into the jawbone. It takes a few weeks for the whole process from beginning to end but in the end it is a nearly permanent solution. This is a great option because it leaves the adjacent teeth completely unaffected and melds perfectly into the smile like a natural tooth. On the other hand, having several areas that need treatment and that are highly visible may discourage a person from spending the weeks in treatment and healing to have several dental implants. For these situations, dentures offer a much quicker and more complete cure for this type of problem.

Another thing that is significant and worthy of consideration is the cost of these two different procedures. While there are some ways to mitigate the cost it is almost always going to cost more to have several dental implants than a comparable set of dentures. That is because each tooth must be individually cast and crafted and the titanium anchors must be inserted in every spot. A big part of what may be the determining factor is what insurance will cover and how much they are willing to pay for treatment.

Both dental implants and dentures offer solutions to the problem of missing teeth. Only by speaking with a dentist will it be possible to find out which of these treatments is best for each individual situation. Regardless of cost one really should have the procedure that is most recommended by the doctor and will provide the maximum benefit in both attractiveness and function. Remember, while teeth are beautiful they are primarily a functional part of the body and when they are not working they can cause a variety of problems. Hopefully, by speaking with the dentist about your needs he or she will be able to tell you what is going to function best in your mouth.
