Dental Office: How Modern Practices Benefit You

Many adults have some level of anxiety when going to the dental office. Here are some reasons why modern dentistry practices are eliminating this fear.

It’s been estimated that up to 75% of American adults experience some level of anxiety when going to a dental office. The most extreme cases of fear are often due to personal negative experiences or hearing of other’s negative experiences. Others may simply be uncomfortable with the invasiveness feeling of having our teeth exposed and prodded. For others, the sounds and smells of the environment may be unappealing.

Fortunately, since being made aware of this, dental offices around the country have been working to make their practice more and more patient friendly. There are several ways available to do so from the increased use of modern technology, to the creation of a more customer centric business.

Help for anxiety
The practice of sedation dentistry is become a common way to reduce patient anxiety during longer procedures from extractions to implants and root canals. Intravenous sedation creates the same conscious sedation that is used for minor surgeries and invasive diagnostic procedures.

Even without full sedation, offices are utilizing a variety of techniques to make intense procedures more tolerable. Electric hand piece are often used to perform root canals that lacks the drill noise which can be so unnerving. Lasers are another tool increasingly being used as an alternative to drills to minimize discomfort and allow the doctor to work with more precision. Also, more and more dental offices are also using computer controlled anesthesia, which keeps the pain under control without leaving a patient numb for hours.

Service excellence
The cold, uncaring dental office that we may recall from childhood is disappearing. Most emphasize patient service, care and communication. Many are expanding to offer a larger number of specializations under one roof to avoid the need to go to various providers. To accommodate busy professional clients, more flexible, extended hours and emergency services are increasingly available.

Modern technology has also improved patient service, with digital x-ray technology that decreases radiation exposure. Video glasses or other similar tools are often available to allow patients to watch and listen to TV and movie programs, blocking out noise of their procedure and helping to pass the time quickly.

Larger arrays of services are also available to improve patients’ appearance and their health. Tooth whitening, treatments for halitosis and various forms of veneers can help a patient look and feel their best.
