Finding a good dentist shouldn’t be a hard process. After all even the smallest towns usually have more than one dentist to choose from. However having multiple dentist to choose from doesn’t necessarily mean you can pick just anyone and be pleased with your choice. The trick to a good match is to make sure you select someone you will be comfortable with for the long haul so you aren’t constantly looking for a new dentist.

The most basic search criteria include finding a dentist that is located in your area with compatible hours for you to be able to get in. If you are reliant on public transportation to get to the dentist you need to be double sure that anyone you select is easy to get to with public transportation.

Other basic components of your search include finding a dentist that will accept your dental insurance if you have any. If you don’t have insurance you should check around and find out if any dentist are willing to offer you a discount for paying in cash at the time of your appointment. You can also check out dentist who are new to the area or just getting started with their own practice and see if they are more willing to work with you on a payment schedule than a dentist who is more established.

Once you find a few dentists that you think would fit your basic search requirements you should ask the receptionist how long the average wait to get in is. Bear in mind though that once you are an established patient with most dentists you can generally get in quicker than new patients who aren’t yet established can be scheduled.

You should also ask how emergencies are after hours and on weekends handled. You want to make sure that if you need medical care on off hours or holidays you can have access to it.

Finally once you find someone you fill will fit your criteria you should schedule an appointment to meet the dentist and get a feel for the comfort level in the office. Most dentists are aware that patients are fearful or nervous about going to the dentist and will put off care because of their fears. Dentist respond to these fears by creating an environment that is comfortable for patients. This can be accomplished by having patients listen to headphones for television on the ceilings or radio to distract them from the dental work being done.

If you follow these tips for selecting a dentist you should be able to select a dentist that you will be happy with for years to come and end your search for the perfect dentist for years to come.
