Dentist Shopping After Moving

Finding a family dentist that has the qualities to suit your family's needs should be one of the important items on your to-do list when you move to a new area.

Say you have moved to a new area and now need a new family dentist you can rely on and trust. What kind of qualities should you look for? You can tell a lot about the kind of service you can expect to receive, simply by calling and visiting the office once or twice without an appointment.

First, you want to make sure that you receive quick, courteous service. If you choose to call the office first, does a human being answer? If so, does the receptionist seem professional and eager to help you, or is she frustrated and annoyed that you have called? If an answering machine or service is being used, you'll want to consider whether the instructions are clear and if your call is returned promptly.

Once you're able to speak with a helpful individual, you can ask about a price list of services, insurances accepted, and payment options. Especially since some dentist offices require up-front payment for emergency services, knowing about such policies ahead of time is key. After all, if someone in your family is in major pain, the last thing you want to do is having to find a new dentist with which you're unfamiliar.

Second, you'll want to visit the office at a time when you have at least a half hour to observe the waiting area and see how clients are treated. You don't have to explain yourself; you can just say that you're waiting for someone. In a way, you are. You're waiting for someone to leave or come in, and you're also waiting to see the professionals who would potentially be servicing your family's smiles. Of course, consider whether these individuals exude the kind of professionalism and friendliness that you desire. You'll also want to take note of whether the waiting area and the dental professionals you see seem clean and organized.

If you have small children, you will want to take special note regarding how child-friendly the office seems. Clues that you might notice include children's toys, coloring books, videos, or magazines, as well as kid-friendly art and oral hygiene posters. Fun, bright colors may help your little ones find going to get their pearly whites cleaned appealing rather than frightening, as it sometimes can be. If children are in the office when you visit, you'll want to notice how the dentist, hygienist, and receptionist interact with them.

By scoping out a few different dental offices and their price lists, available services, financial options, and office atmospheresArticle Search, you'll be able to make an informed decision and schedule an appointment with confidence when someone in your family needs to go to the dentist.
