Dentures - Different Types and Alternatives
If you have missing teeth or are scheduled to have some removed, chances are you’ve thought about dentures. They can be a nice alternative to your natural teeth and there’s no question that the applications have gotten better through the years. Here are some of the types available, as well as some of the alternatives.
The Full Set
If there are significant tooth problems, a dentist may opt to remove all of the teeth and replace them with a full set of dentures. This process includes removing the teeth and then waiting a couple of months for the gums to heal from the trauma. At this point, the replacement teeth can be put in and they should fit perfectly due to molds taken at the time. In the meantime, however, the patient will usually not have to go through life without any teeth. The dentist can fit them with an immediate set, which can be worn in the interim. This temporary set may not be entirely comfortable, but it will do the job while the gums heal.
The Partial Set
Partial dentures are sometimes called “bridges”, as they are used to bridge the gap between teeth that will not be removed. These replacements are used when there are only a few teeth that need to be replaced. In some cases, there may only be one. These replacements can either be made permanent with dental cement, or can be applied as removable attachments, depending on what the wearer would prefer. The permanent variety is usually the more expensive choice. Dentists recommend replacing these teeth in one form or another, as they can ensure that the remaining teeth do not attempt to crowd in and fill the gap, throwing off the patient’s bite.
One of the most popular (yet expensive) alternatives to dentures is the dental implant. These implants consist of an artificial root being drilled into the jaw, upon which the replacement tooth can be screwed in. Due to the costs and the discomfort involved, it is unusual for a patient to opt for a full set of implants as opposed to removable dentures, although it is not unheard of. For individual replacements, many patients choose implants because they are more natural looking and more durable than other choices.
