Description of Nadi shodhana Pranayama and its advantages

If we split the term Nadi Shodhana Pranayama then we’ll get to know that Nadi is a tubular organ for the passage of prana, or energy carrying seminal, cosmic, vital and other energies, as well as sensation, intelligence and consciousness in the subtle, causal and physical bodies. The Nadi Shodhana Pranayama means the purification of the nerves and it also referred to as 'alternate nose breathing'. Shodhana means purifying, or cleansing and pranayama as we all know is an act of mental and spiritual peace.

For performing Nadi Shodhana Pranayama you have to sit in a comfortable cross legged position, spine straight, shoulders down, and relaxed. Close your eyes, head should be centered between the shoulders and chin should tip slightly downward. Use the thumb and fourth finger (ring finger) of your right hand and place the two middle fingers softly on your forehead. Keep them closed into the palm to avoid strain in the neck, and shoulders.

Close you right nostril by using your thumb, as you breathe into the left. Firstly, start off the inhalation process to the count of five and reduce the count after experiencing dizziness. When the inhalation process reaches to its top, immediately close the left nostril with your right ring finger, removing your thumb from the right nostril at the same time, and start doing a slow, rhythmic, effortless exhalation through this nostril to the count of five. Start inhaling through the right nostril to the count of five and close the right nostril with your right thumb. Then exhale through the left nostril to the count of five.
