Determining if You Need Urgent Care or Not

An urgent care center is the place to go when you cannot book an appointment to see your doctor. However it is not the medical facility where you should go for every health issue that comes up. Here we look at how to figure out if you should visit your doctor, a care center or go to the hospital.

Urgent care centers continue to see growth all of the time. These centers offer a critical service to many patients that might have to go without medical treatment otherwise. They fill the gap that exists between your physician and the Emergency Room (ER). This type of care is very much needed throughout the country. It is answering a call from the medical community and it is filling that need.

For many of us knowing when it is time to make a trip to the ER is easy to figure out. For instance if you suspect you or someone you love is having a heart attack then you know that every second counts and that medical intervention is required immediately. However sometimes you may have a health problem crop up and you may not know whether it necessitates a visit to the ER or not.

Deciphering what type of care you require, how urgent it is and where you should seek medical assistance is not always simple or easy. If you can assess your health condition to the best of your ability then you will know whether you should schedule an appointment with your doctor, go to an urgent care facility or head straight for the hospital.

Doctor’s care is something you can receive at the doctor’s office. If you have what amounts to a minor problem that is not life threatening such as a head cold, an ear infection, a nail infection or strep throat then call the office and make an appointment. You should also see your physician for check-ups you require, annual exams and all on-going care as well as follow-up care.

Urgent care centers offer care for those times when it is not possible to see your doctor. In other words, these centers offer care, treatment and diagnosis during non-office hours such as at night and on weekends. At these centers you can have minor cuts, sprains and injuries attended to. If you have a fever, stomach crampsFeature Articles, an animal bite or a broken finger or toe then you can be treated by a qualified healthcare practitioner at one of these care facilities.

Be aware of the fact that urgent care is as the name implies. This is not the place to go for any medical issue that can wait until you can see your doctor. It is also not the place to go for any type of follow-up treatment. That is for your medical provider to help you with. If you do have a serious threat to your health then you should bypass an urgent care center and head straight for the ER.

Being able to determine the condition you are in and which medical facility would be most accommodating to your needs is very important. Not only will you be helping yourself out but also other patients who are also in need of medical assistance and intervention. Take the time to find out where the closest urgent treatment center is to your residence as well as where the hospital is. In this way you will be prepared the next time you are taken sick or hurt yourself late at night or on a Saturday or Sunday.
