Don’t Leave Your Stomach Acidity

Acidity is related to heartburn and gas formation in stomach. In acidity,  acid reflux or gastroesopohageal reflux disease, or more commonly known as urdhva gata amalpitta in ayurveda, there is a movement of gastric juices from the stomach into the lower esophagus.

This is a condition which is caused when acidic contents in stomach move upward into the esophagus and making it dysfunctional. Understanding the right treatment at right time and causes of any disease, like acidity or acid reflux, is very helpful for effective treatments. In ayurveda it is considerd to be caused by the aggarvation of pitta dosha that is responsible for burning sensation caused in the chest region.

Causes of Acidity

A person experiences attacks of acidity a few times in a year or at times even just once in a year. Acidity is not caused by a serious medical condition. Sudden onset of acidity is usually triggered by foods that you eat. Spicy and fatty foods are harder to digest than most food; this, in effect, prompts the cells that pump acid to produce more acid than is necessary.

Following are the major acidity causes:

1.    Eating foods rich in fats like chocolates also causes acidity
2.    Due to some problems in the functioning of the digestive system
3.    Pregnancy, aging or obesity can also cause acidity
4.    Sometimes excessive intake of alcohol also leads to acidity
5.    Acidity also arises either by keeping stomach empty for long time or skipping breakfast
6.    Eating junk foods, oily and spicy foods also leads to burning sensation in stomach and chest area and causes acidity

Symptoms of Acidity

Following are the acidity symptoms:

•    Restlessness with continuous cramps in the stomach
•    Respiratory problems and coughing
•    Other symptoms of acidity are nausea and vomiting
•    Sometimes bellyache is also felt
•    Sour belches and passing off wind

Treatment & Diet

•    Eat dinner two to three hours before sleeping time as it keeps you healthy.
•    Eat small meals as it helps in digestion.
•    Alcohol, caffeine should be a big no in your life for healthy living and acidity control.
•    Avoid eating fried, fatty, junk foods, and excessive chocolates.
•    Avoid eating onions, citrus fruits, spicy foods, as they worsen the acid reflux or acidity disease.

•    Maintain adequate body weight it helps in acidity control
•    Avoid eating protein-rich and calcium-rich foods like milk and diary products at night.
