Ear Reconstruction: The Basics About The ProcedureEar Reconstruction can be a rather complex process. It is usually performed in specialist centers, where, provided the appropriate circumstances, it may be possible to attain the desired results. Due to the physical nature of this body part, the process demands the utmost attention to detail. Though, challenging as it may be, this procedure can be made easier and predicable if the operating surgeon is aware of the surgical anatomy and principles. The reconstruction process has two stages, separated by a 6-12 month span of time. Initially, a skin pocket is created at the site of the ear by reorienting available tissue and thinning the skin to mimic that of skin. Rib cartilage is then harvested in three separate pieces. These parts are carved before being sewn together with a very fine stainless steel in order to make up the frame. The frame is then inserted into the skin pocket and light suction is applied in order to allow the skin and the frame to stick. The operation itself takes between 4-6 hours, with a 5-7 day hospital stay expected afterward. 6 to 12 months down the road, it's time for stage two. This process involves releasing the frame from the head, at which point a small piece of cartilage is inserted behind it. This is done to maintain projection. Next, a flap of tissue is used to cover the exposed cartilage. The tissue is typically taken from under the scalp or the skin at the higher part of the neck. A skin graft is then applied. The operation this time takes roughly 3-4 hours with an expected hospital stay between 2-3 days, afterward. For abnormalities such as microtia, operations are usually deferred until after the patient is around nine or so. This is due to the fact that prior to this age, there is typically not enough rib cartilage to harvest for the surgery. Treatments can be performed on adults of any age, though is may be more difficult in those who are much older. Alternatives to reconstructive methods are prosthetics. In these instances, the ear is clipped on via two titanium pins which are inserted into the skull. If you or loved ones are considering ear reconstruction, make sure to do the research. Where as there are many cosmetic surgeons out there ,
only a select few have acquired the knowledge and skills necessary to
perform such an operation. Make sure to schedule a consultation and
take the time to make the best decision possible.
