Eye Stye Treatment, Remedies and Tips to get rid of eye stye

Stye or sty is an infection of eyes where gland at eyelid becomes infected. Eye Stye is a very common type of infection of the hair follicle of an eyelash, resembling a sore similar to a boil or a pimple in the gland at the edge of the eyelid which leads to blockage of the hair follicles that may become swollen, nuisance and painful to the touch.

Some styes may be related to rubbing the eye with the dirty hand. However, recurrent infection may be due to some constitutional causes. Eye stye occurs when staphylococcal bacteria infect one of the tiny glands at the base of the eyelid hairs and then becomes inflamed. It is commonly found as small bumps on the base of eyelids. This disease does not affect the vision. Sometimes tiny pimples are developing in this disease.

Causes of eye stye

It can be caused by infection of oil- secreting glands and infection of staphylococcal bacteria at the base of eyelid or eyelashes. Eating boiled potatoes, white bread, pudding and confectionery are other causes of eye stye. Sometimes, it can be developing by rubbing the eye with contaminated hand.

Symptoms of Eye stye

 pain in the eye or eyelid, especially when blinking or to the touch

 redness of the eyelid itself

 blurred vision of the affected eye

 swelling of the eyelid


Diagnosis of eye stye
Visual examination generally confirms this infection. Culture of purulent material from the abscess usually reveals a staphylococcal microbe.


Home remedies for eye stye

  Rub clove spice in water and apply it over the stye to relief pain.

  Use a grated potato as a poultice to reduce swelling in inflamed eyes.

  Slit an aloe leaf lengthwise and place the pulpy side on the sore eye.

  Boil 1 teaspoon of coriander seeds with a cupful of water like an herbal tea preparation to wash the eyes 3-4 times a day.

  1 teaspoon of turmeric in 2 cups of water until it reduces in half. Cool and strain 4-5 times through a fine muslin. Apply as eye drops 3-4 times a day

  Take a cup of water. Dissolve 2-3 granules of alum in it. Use as an eyewash.

  Guava leaves, warmed and placed on a warm damp cloth, and then used as a compress; reduce the redness, pain and swelling.

  Boil a handful of acacia leaves in two cups of water to make a decoction and apply it as compress on the eyelids

Preventions tips for eye stye

     Always wash hands properly with soap before touching the eyes.
     Don't punture sty yourself as it will spread the infection on other places of your eye also and allow the eye sty to rupture on its own. This will result in proper cure.
     Contact users should especially take care of their eye hygiene.
     Dont squeeze or rub the stye affected eye.
     Squeezing a stye results in the bacteria flowing into the blood stream.
     Wash your face atleat 2-3 times every day, including the eye.
     Always use clean tissues to clean areas around the eyes.
     A lot of eye infections are infectious and can be easily passed on to others. Especially the treatment of eye styes requires a high level of hygiene.
