Eyelid Surgery: Know The Dos And Don'ts During Recovery Period
Once you have undergone eyelid surgery there will be doctors orders that are specific to this type of procedure that must be followed as closely as possible in order to ensure the best recovery outcome.
Once you arrive home you will have ointment that you must apply the first few days to prevent the stitches from drying out. You will be sensitive to light and your vision will be blurred and possibly even doubled for some time as you will be tearing constantly the first few days, so it will help to have someone with you to assist with mundane tasks that become hard when your vision is limited.
Your doctor will also advise you to keep iced pads on your eyes to reduce swelling. It's very convenient to have more than one set of these ice pads to be able to rotate them in and out of the freezer. It makes a difference to have the swelling iced as much as possible.
Eye drops are also an important remedy when recovering from eyelid surgery because they not only keep everything from getting dry, they also can relieve pain. Don't forget to elevate your head over every other part of your body when sleeping or when resting because this reduces swelling too. Bending over, stretching or lifting heavy weights can temporarily raise your blood pressure which is not advisable while undergoing recover for eyelid surgery.
After the first two days you should be switching to warm pads on your eyes to ease discomfort and as your sensitivity to light increases you can wear sunglasses to alleviate any irritation experienced. The stitches should be removed after two days as well, but you will still have a lot of soreness, swelling and bruising. Unfortunately, you cannot wear contact lenses while recovering from your eyelid surgery.
Wearing glasses to watch TV or read a book is fine, but only do this after the first two or three days. If you have to go back to work, don't do so before seven to ten days. You will still be visibly scarred, swollen and bruised when you go to work, but this can be easily hidden with the proper application of makeup.
After a few weeks of recovery and some follow up appointments you will finally be ready to put on the eyeliner and go out to have some fun again, but until that time be sure to stay home, finish your antibiotics and keep icing those eyes.
