Eyelid Surgery - The Basic Facts

Eyelid surgery, otherwise known as blepharoplasty, is rapidly becoming one of the most popular cosmetic procedures. This articles looks at some of the facts surrounding the procedure, including why so many people are choosing to have it done.

According to the latest statistics, almost 150,000 people had eyelid surgery in the year 2009, making it one of the most popular cosmetic procedures done in the United States. It’s medical term is blepharoplasty and it aims to correct droopiness and bulging, which can make such a tremendous difference in the appearance of the face. This kind of thing happens naturally over the course of time, but for many, it happens much earlier than they would like. It makes them look much older than their years. Good cosmetic correction can eliminate that problem and restore a youthful looking appearance.

It’s easy to underestimate how much of a difference eyelid surgery can make to the appearance of a face. If you doubt it, look at any person wearing sunglasses versus how they look without the sunglasses. The same concept goes for regular eyeglasses. Most Americans point to their eyes as their defining feature. They seem to speak for the person, even when words aren’t used. They can tell you whether the person is tired or excited. Cool or anxious. But can they really? Sometimes the eyes are deceiving and give off the wrong impression. Bloodshot eyes are often seen as symptoms of being tired, or stoned. But just as often, they simply mean the person’s eyes are dry for no particular reason. Likewise, sagging eyelids may mean a person has reached a certain age, when really it could simply be a genetic trait.

There are a number of factors that contribute to early sagging or drooping. Genetics play a part, as does sun damage. Smoking cigarettes can play a big role in a number of premature aging characteristics. Eyelid surgery can counteract the effects of these influences and make a big difference in how people perceive you and make an even bigger difference in how you see yourself.

Because the causes of premature aging characteristics are so varied, there is no perfect age to get cosmetic eyelid surgery. That area of skin is among the thinnest on the entire body. Because of that, it is usually the first place premature signs of aging begin to show. Anyone showing these signs, as long as they are otherwise healthy, is usually a good candidate for the procedure.

As with all cosmetic procedures, the decision to have eyelid surgery is a personal one. It should not be made by anyone but you. When you’re ready to learn moreComputer Technology Articles, find a qualified plastic surgeon in your area and set up a consultation.
